NED University Events Calendar for 2007

Posted by Shahran on August 22, 2007

All,

I thought it to be interesting to put up the official Calendar of events for this year set up by the Office of Student Affairs at NED. Then we can keep track of the events, and current students other folks can get the pictures or write an event report on each of those. That would be really interesting for us alumni.

Here’s the calendar, taken directly from the NED University website (click on the calendar to see it in full size):

Its a great feeling for me to see the name of “MOSAIC” on the schedule.I was one of the founding members and actually involved in writing the constitution around 1995. It is encouraging to see it surviving after 12 years.

  3. Thanks for drawing our attention to it, Shahran. Long live Mosaic! [Kindly also point to its web presence.]

    Shahran,

    This MOSAIC is interesting …

Can you please describe what it is? Could you share the constitution?

I find it fascinating that it has organized a Symposium on Gender issues and also an Arts/Crafts exhibition.

In the days that we were in NED (early 80’s) the environment would often get uncomfortable for girl students. Eve Teasing and name-calling was quite common. It must have improved after that because i hear there are a lot of girl students … In our batch – there were 6 girls in EE, about 25 or 30 odd ( i think) in CE and about 2 or perhaps 3 in ME. This is out of 600 plus students in total. There was no CS until 84 I think

    Safwan Sahib,

MOSAIC(members of society of artistic and intellectual creativity) was created by a group of young nedians and as I recall, there were 20 members and half of them were girls. There were some executive members and then regular members.Almost all of them wanted to do something for the university It was a purely non-political group. To its credit was organized painting and photography exhibitions, eloqution. The most remarkable thing of the MOSAIC was the spring festival of 1997 which was organized to celebrate the golden jubilee of NED.It had events ranging from Kite flying to Real Camel Rides. The news of the event came as a wildfire among the student community in Karachi so much so that guys and girls as far as from IBA and DMC and SMC came to attend it. and St.Joseph came in probably for the first time at NED.

Credit goes to the team and also our teachers such as Ms.Sima Jalil,Neelofar Master,Raza Ali Khan,Afifa Zareen who were the leaders behind the mosaic and took the wrath of other teachers for supporting these organizations.

As far as the ratio between girls and boys it was not that even during our times we had three girls in our class but it seems that now the situation has been improved and even in EE And ME you can see that there are girls comparable to CE and CS.

I think I need to write a blog on the spring festival.

Its great to see the name of Safwanshah after a long time.

  7. SafwanShah says:

    Thanks Shahran.

Nothing could cheer NED more than the presence of a lot of girls.

I remember Neelofer Master – she was a very sincere person.

Perhaps you could describe the NED of your times … what was the good, bad, ugly? … what did you hear of the past? Did people say NED is better than before or did you hear that good days were when activism was alive and kicking … did you feel you were in an exciting place or was NED a boring place where students crammed (oops) all the time … i am certainly keen to hear about the NED of the 90’s and NED of this decade.

Well I think the early nineties was a bit cold period student unions were banned , a number of students were rusticated for their involvement with political groups.
The rangers were in the campus, wandering around here and there. Atleast during our times there were no clashes that happened involved guns but rather Bamboos or or Broken Coke glass bottles.

I know in the 95-98 was another golden period since we had no major phaddas and there were events from movie shows and worldcup coverage in the Auditorium to Mushairas to Roo Baroo to declamation contest.
Political activism was not as apparent as it is supposed to be due to the ban on unions. Well I believe in those days students were allowed to organize events but they were discouraged to do those under the political parties. In addition to it. There was a sense of anger against politics since politics and violence became synomymous and hence majority of the students do not show any political activism.

But certainly we had debates discussions among other groups and parties, teachers and that was a healthy sign.

    Salam everyone!!

I am currently studing in 3rd year CIS. Since most of you have passed really earlier let me share some latest about NED.

First of all the girls ratio has improved alot in the NED, particularly in departments like computer & information systems, Telecom, electronics, electrical, BCIT and several others. One of the reason being the discipline and peaceful environment NED’s administration has created and of course girls really study harder than guys [:)].
Secondly Shahran bhai the MOSAIC still exists along with several other socities but i have never heard of kite flying n camel ride now. There was just one event of art held this year. And so is the case with several other socities (just one or two events per year). Most of the students even don’t know about these socities, and if they know then they hardly show interest in them.
But there are several other events which are not enlisted on the official calender, cause they are organized by individual departments without assistance of student affairs. One such event is the TECHELITE- which was solely organized by the students of CIS department.

  10. Shahran says:

    Manoj Bhai Wassalam,
Well when made this society, it was not under the direct supervision of Department of Student Affairs and thats why we were able to finance and organize events with sponsors on our own. We took the wrath of other departments who did not liked the idea.

Of course if the societies are under the administration,it is hard to even organize one event with the meagre finances and as a public university, it is tough to get finances from outside.

I think this is also another area where the Alumni needs to get involved.

BTW, if you ask Mr.Raza, Mr.Usmani,Ms.Master or Mr.Nauman they will tell you about the Camel Rides and Kit Flying events during the Golden Jubilee :)

Also can you write a blog post on the events with pictures ?
