Calling All NEDians: Where Do We Live?

Posted by Sabahat (iFaqeer) on August 26, 2007

NEDians World Map
We use Sitemeter’s free service to track statistics on this blog. The map above shows the last 100 visitors to this blog in a 24 hour period and where they came from–as much as it is able to tell online. I find the graphic rather informative–and it seems to to be a pretty good representation of where NEDians live. But I could be wrong. It would be wonderful to hear from NEDians around the world and around Pakistan. Please drop a line in comments here and let everyone know where you are–especially if you’re in a place where there aren’t a lot of NEDians or if you think it’s a place the rest of us wouldn’t usually think of NEDians as living in. [That last includes you, Kashif Malik, in Multan.]

Dear Friends of NED Alumni,On behalf of the steering committee of NED Alumni Association of Silicon Valley, it is with great pleasure that I invite you, your families and your friends to join in celebrating the rich heritage of our alma mater on Sept 8, 2007. NEDUET is a great institution, established in 1920 as Prince of Wales College, that has nurtured us and produced a long, impressive list of alumni that are very successful in Silicon Valley, the United States and elsewhere in the world. You will get to meet many successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, highly experienced executives and visionary researchers and technologists. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Reconnecting with Old Friends and Elders

Posted by safwan_shah on August 21, 2007

I have spent the last few days calling and inviting people to Convention 2007 from across the US, Canada, and even Pakistan. I have talked to alumni of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and one of 2003. The names I spoke to include Akbar Younus Ansari, ex-President of NED Students Union, the person who led the caravan that one day moved old-campus to new campus in 1976; Firdaus Shamim who was also the President of NED Students Union and is so positive and spirited that in 5 minutes he can increase your energy level to new heights–we spoke for 10 minutes this morning as he talked about his vision for future NED events; Mazhar Ali who played in so many TV dramas and is a fountain of pertinent poetry, he is our poet par excellence; Aftab Rizvi who is a debater par excellence and hosted so many TV programs and was also a Literary and Debating force of his time; Kamal Mehdi, who many may remember as Kamal Bhai, an amazing man who seems to have tireless energy and endless compassion for others -yes, I admit, he is my true mentor and the person I look up to; Ali Haider, the famous athlete who held the national record for high jump, he didn’t do the Fosbury flop (you need to know the subtleties of High Junmping to appreciate that) but could still easily jump over 6 feet!

In talking to all of them and then assimilating those conversations I feel proud that I am an NEDian. A relatively humble small town kid who ended up in Karachi and had the opportunity to make acquaintance with these amazing people – NED’s alumni.

The NED Alumni Story

Posted by riaz_haq on August 17, 2007

As many of you already know, the theme of the Nedians Convention 2007 in San Jose is “Celebrate the Long History and Rich Heritage of NED“. As we count down to the Convention Day on Sept 8, I have written a piece celebrating the diversity and achievements of fellow alumni, with whom we all feel a sense of kinship. This will be published in Aug 17 issue of Pakistan Link, a California weekly published by a fellow NEDian Arif Mansuri. Here it is:

About NED:

NED University of Engineering and Technology is the alma mater to thousands of NEDians currently residing in North America with hundreds of them in and around Silicon Valley, the high-tech hub of the world. Established in 1921 as the Prince of Wales College, it was renamed in 1942 after a Parsee philanthropist Mr. Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw. Until 1977, when it became a university in its own right, it was affiliated with various universities including Bombay University, Sindh University and Karachi University in successive periods before and after Pakistan’s independence. It remains one of the oldest and best known institutions of higher learning in Pakistan, with a large number of very successful alumni as testament to its rich and glorious heritage. Hundreds of these alumni are gathering in Silicon Valley on Sept 8, 2007 to celebrate it. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »
